Aswan is a city in the south of Egypt and is the capital of the Governorate. The city is a busy market and tourist centre located just north of the Aswan reservoir on the east bank of the River Nile close to the first cataract. The city has been Egypt’s southern strategic and commercial gateway since ancient times. It contains significant archaeological sites such as Philae and Kalabsha temples, in addition, Aswan is a remarkably close “pit stop” before you continue further south to visit the famous temple of Abu-Simble.

The modern city has expanded and includes the formerly separate community on the island of Elephantine. Aswan is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the category of craft and folklore and has a current population of more than 1.5 million people. The city is elevated by 194 meters above sea level and has a total area of 34,608 square kilometres. Aswan’s weather is one of the hottest and driest climates, so we recommend that you come prepared for the heat with plenty of sunscreens and always have a bottle of drinking water to keep yourself hydrated.
